Robotic Surgery System
Severance Hospital began using da Vinci as a robotic surgery system for the first time in Korea and has performed over 7,500 cases from 2005 to the first half of 2012. The System offers greater maneuverability and precision to the surgeon and prevents resting tremors of the surgeon's hand. In addition, it reduces blood loss, pain and recovery time for the patient. Severance Hospital has been expanding the areas of treatment with robotic surgery and is being recognized for its unique surgical applications and its excellent records.
Gastric Cancer
Severance's Gastric Cancer Clinic conducts approximately 1,600 operations a year and therefore, seeks to offer optimal treatment to our patients. For example, an electrocautery tool incises with the least amount of bleeding and halves the operation time from 4 to 2 hours. With new and innovative surgical methods, and abandoning outdated and painful methods, the gastric cancer treatment team has reduced the days of hospitalization from 10-12 days to only 5-7 days. The surgeons of our Gastric Cancer Clinic have performed the largest number of gastric resections also using the da Vinci robotic surgical system.
Arthroscopic Surgery
Severance has accumulated many years of clinical and research experience by performing each year over 800 knee, 700 shoulder and 1,000 ankle arthroscopic surgeries. Arthroscopic surgery is performed by inserting a small arthroscope into the surgical region, and it can reduce the recovery and rehabilitation period by minimizing incision and damage around the target tissue. Researchers at Severance Hospital have presented over 100 papers to the Science Citation Index journals and introduced operation techniques that the hospital has developed. Severance has also registered over 10 videos for the visual and auditory library of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS).
